Horticulture Program

Studying horticulture will develop your sensitivity and awareness of the environment while also providing practical skills in designing, installing and maintaining landscapes and irrigation systems.

The Diablo Valley College Horticulture program prepares students for all aspects of work in what is often referred to as the “green industry”. We offer a variety of certificates that prepare you for state licenses, industry certificates and preparation of transfer to a four-year college or university offering an advanced degree in horticulture. The horticulture program includes classes in basic botany, plant propagation/production, plant identification and use, pruning practices/arboriculture, adaptive horticulture, integrated pest management, landscape design, soil and water management, turf management, terminology, and greenhouse management.

Completion of the program prepares students for numerous state licenses and industry certificates, including landscape contractor, pest control operator, nursery person, arborist, landscape technician, maintenance technician, and irrigation designer.

Whether you are looking for career training that will prepare you for immediate employment, or for preparation for transfer to continue your studies at a four-year institution, our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping aspiring horticulturists and those interested in pursuing the research side of horticulture.
